I’m Ryan (he/him/his), and I’ve been practicing as a therapist since 2012. I am licensed in both Illinois and Nevada, and am a former Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University, where I taught graduate-level courses and supervised masters students’ clinical work.
I prefer to focus on the human element of therapy. Yes, I have a lot to offer in terms of insight and expertise, but ultimately our relationship and the spirit of collaboration matters most. I’m not going to throw manualized treatment or jargon at you (unless that’s what you want!) - instead, we’ll figure out what will work best for you and build from there. It makes for a much more awesome experience.
I prefer to facilitate a more casual environment where we can openly discuss anything that’s on your mind and where you can feel safe to explore who you are and how you relate to others/ the issues you’re experiencing.
I specialize in working with athletes. I’ve worked with all levels from high-level professional athletes (golf, tennis, bowling, mixed martial arts, hockey, etc.) all the way down to lower-level athletes who are passionate about their sport/s and enjoy competition. If anxiety or other issues are getting in the way of performing your best, I’m your guy.
Not an athlete? That’s okay! I have extensive experience working with folks who struggle with severe and debilitating anxiety, performance anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), emotional expression, and communication difficulties. These are tough issues to work through, for sure, but the good news is that managing them effectively is possible with the right approach!
As you may imagine, sports are a large part of my life, and I dedicate a significant amount of my leisure time to them. I primarily play ice hockey (goalie) and golf, and love to watch my favorite teams live and on television whenever I can. I also play guitar, paint Warhammer 40k miniatures, & play video games.
I also have a public presence. I host a Twitch live-stream and YouTube channel titled [Game] Sessions with a Therapist under the pseudonym “Dr. Mick”, which has been featured on several podcasts, columns, websites, & magazines. You may have also seen me on TikTok when scrolling through your “for you” page. My stream is designed to provide general knowledge to a broad range of viewers who may not otherwise have access to good mental health information and to de-stigmatize therapy in general.
I look forward to working with you!
